Ingredients

1 sheet of frozen puff pastry, thawed

1 medium apple (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), cored and thinly sliced

4 oz Brie cheese, sliced with rind removed

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 egg (for egg wash)

1 tablespoon water

Optional: ¼ cup chopped walnuts or pecans for added crunch

Optional: Honey for drizzling

Instructions

Prepare the Oven and Puff Pastry: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Dust a clean surface with flour, then unfold the thawed puff pastry. Gently roll it out into a rectangle approximately 12x9 inches to ensure an even thickness.

Slice and Season the Apples: In a mixing bowl, combine the thinly sliced apples with the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss until all of the apple slices are evenly coated. Allow the mixture to sit for about 5 minutes to let the flavors meld together.

Shape the Puff Pastry: Cut the puff pastry into three equal sections lengthwise, leaving a central strip of about 3 inches for the filling. On each side of the center strip, make diagonal cuts that are about 1 inch apart, extending from the edges towards the center.

Layer the Filling: Begin by laying the slices of Brie cheese along the center strip of the pastry. Next, evenly distribute the prepared spiced apple mixture over the cheese. If you're adding nuts for extra texture, sprinkle them on top of the apple layer.

Braid the Pastry: Starting from the top, fold the upper edge of the pastry over the cheese and apples. Then, take one of the diagonal strips from one side and fold it over the filling toward the center. Alternate folding the diagonal strips from each side until you reach the bottom of the braid. Be sure to tuck the ends securely to seal the braid.

Apply the Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water. Using a pastry brush, apply the egg wash generously over the surface of the braided pastry. This will give your braid a stunning golden finish once baked.

Bake to Perfection: Position the braided pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is beautifully puffed and a rich golden brown.

Serve and Enjoy: Allow the baked pastry to cool for a few minutes before slicing. Drizzle with honey for added sweetness, if desired. Slice and serve warm for a delightful treat that combines savory and sweet flavors!
