Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

1/4 cup milk (or your choice of non-dairy alternative)

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1 large egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 medium tart apple (such as Granny Smith), peeled and finely chopped

Additional cinnamon and sugar for topping (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan with non-stick cooking spray or use a silicone mold to ensure easy removal of the baked donuts.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Whisk together until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the unsweetened applesauce, milk (or non-dairy alternative), vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir gently until the mixture is smooth and well combined.

Combine Mixtures: Carefully pour the wet ingredients into the bowl of dry ingredients. Using a spatula, gently fold the two mixtures together until just combined. Be cautious not to overmix the batter, which can result in dense donuts. Once combined, gently fold in the finely chopped apple pieces until they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Fill the Donut Pan: Using a piping bag or a spoon, fill each cavity of the donut pan about 2/3 full with the prepared batter to allow room for rising.

Bake: Place the filled donut pan in the preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a donut comes out clean. The tops should be lightly golden.

Cool: After baking, allow the donuts to cool in the pan for approximately 5 minutes. Then, carefully transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Add Topping (optional): For a delightful finishing touch, mix some cinnamon and granulated sugar together in a small bowl. While the donuts are still warm, lightly brush the tops with melted butter, then roll them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat.

Serve: Enjoy your freshly baked Apple Cinnamon Donuts warm, or store them in an airtight container for up to 2 days. These delightful donuts make a perfect pairing with a cup of coffee or tea!
