Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for optimal juiciness)

1 large onion, thinly sliced

4 slices Swiss cheese

4 hamburger buns (preferably brioche, toasted)

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Optional toppings: arugula, pickles, ketchup, mustard

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions:

    - In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.

      - Once the butter has melted, add the thinly sliced onions to the skillet. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking.

        - Cook the onions for about 15-20 minutes, until they are golden brown and caramelized, stirring more frequently towards the end to prevent burning.

          - Season the onions with a pinch of salt to help draw out moisture. Once caramelized, remove from heat and set aside.

            Prepare the Burger Patties:

              - In a mixing bowl, add the ground beef along with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

                - Use your hands to gently combine the ingredients until just mixed, being careful not to overwork the meat to maintain tenderness.

                  - Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into burger patties, roughly ¾ inch thick.

                    Cook the Burgers:

                      - In a clean skillet or grill pan, heat the remaining tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat until shimmering.

                        - Add the burger patties to the skillet. Cook for approximately 4-5 minutes on one side, until a nice crust develops.

                          - Flip the burgers and place a slice of Swiss cheese atop each patty. Continue cooking for an additional 4-5 minutes for medium doneness, adjusting cooking time based on your preferred level of doneness.

                            Toast the Buns:

                              - While the burgers are cooking, toast the hamburger buns. Place the buns cut-side down in another hot skillet for about 2 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy.

                                Assemble the Burgers:

                                  - On the bottom half of each toasted bun, place a cooked patty topped with melted Swiss cheese.

                                    - Generously pile the caramelized onions on top of each burger.

                                      - Add any additional toppings you desire, such as fresh arugula, pickles, ketchup, or mustard.

                                        - Cap each burger with the top half of the bun, gently pressing down. Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.
