Ingredients

1 lb breakfast sausage (bulk or links with casing removed)

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 cups whole milk

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for added heat)

1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough or 2 cups homemade biscuit dough

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, enhances flavor)

Fresh parsley for garnish (optional, adds color)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it's hot enough for baking the nests.

    Prepare the Sausage Gravy:

      - In a large skillet set over medium heat, crumble the breakfast sausage and cook until it’s browned and no longer pink, which should take about 5-7 minutes. Make sure to stir occasionally for even cooking.

        - Once the sausage is cooked, sprinkle the flour over it and stir well. Cook this mixture for about 1 minute to allow the flour to absorb flavors.

          - Gradually whisk in the milk, taking care to eliminate any lumps. Continue to cook and stir until the mixture thickens, approximately 5-8 minutes.

            - Season the gravy with garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper if you desire a spicy kick. Remove the skillet from heat and set aside the sausage gravy.

              Make the Biscuit Nests:

                - On a lightly floured surface, roll each biscuit out to about 1/4 inch thick. Use a round cutter (approximately 3 inches in diameter) to cut out circles from the rolled dough.

                  - Carefully place each dough circle into a greased muffin tin or mini tart pan, pressing gently to shape the dough into a nest form.

                    Assemble the Nests:

                      - Pre-bake the biscuit nests in the preheated oven for about 7 minutes, or until they just begin to turn lightly golden.

                        - Once pre-baked, take the nests out of the oven and generously spoon the prepared sausage gravy into each one. If you're using cheddar cheese, sprinkle it on top for added richness.

                          Final Bake:

                            - Return the filled biscuit nests to the oven for an additional 10-15 minutes. Bake them until the biscuits are a beautiful golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbling.

                              Garnish and Serve:

                                - Once baked, remove the nests from the oven and allow them to cool for a few minutes. For an appealing touch, garnish with fresh parsley before serving. Serve warm and enjoy this delightful dish!
